Hypnosis FAQ

Many people have experienced miraculous changes in their life, as a result of having used hypnosis in order to change unwanted or limiting behaviours, or to come to terms with who they are at heart.

Of all therapies, medical and non-medical, hypnosis is the safest. It has no side effects other than feeling calm & refreshed & is one of the oldest forms of treating people & dates back to ancient Egypt.

Some Misconceptions

There are many misconceptions about hypnosis impressed on us by books, movies, cartoons & TV. As a result Hypnosis has been associated with control & the supernatural. Nothing can be farther from the truth. Hypnosis is a natural state of consciousness that we have all been in before. Although the word sleep is used to describe the trance, the patient is far from being asleep. A person in hypnosis is aware of his surroundings in a detached sort of way, the mind is concentrated & pays very little attention to anything else (much like being deeply involved in a movie or reading a book).

Hypnosis is not:

Sleep - Dangerous - Loss of self-control - Being weak-minded - A state of unconsciousness - Being controlled by someone.

How does it work?

Hypnosis is thought to work by altering our state of consciousness in such a way that the analytical left hand side of the brain is turned off, while the non-analytical right hand side is made more alert. The conscious control of the mind is inhibited, & the subconscious mind awoken. Since the subconscious mind is a deeper seated, more instinctive force than the conscious mind, this is the part which has to change for the patient's behaviour & physical state to alter.

For example, a patient who consciously wants to overcome their fear of spiders may try everything they consciously can to do it, but will still fail as long as their subconscious mind retains this terror & prevents the patient from succeeding. Progress can only be made by reprogramming the subconscious so that instincts & beliefs are abolished or altered.
